Environmental Rangers Society (ERS) has invited two renowed Environmentalist and Conservationist Mr G Perira and Mr Bernard Harrison to speak on the topics of Environmental depletion and the need for human/social intervention in conservation efforts. The talk will be held LT 51A, 13 Jan 2009 at 5.30pm. There will be some hands-on activity after the talk outside the LT. We would cordially like to invite the classes of BE and members of BEGV to attend this 2 hour session. Messrs G Perira and Harrison will also be touching on the significance of intervention at our level and conjuer ideas for the environmental groups which are non conventional yet fufilling.

Watermark Award Ceremony

On 28th Aug 2008, PUB is holding their Watermark Award Ceremony at Marina Barrage.
The event should be from the late evening to night.
On that day, PUB requires guides for the Marina Barrage's gallery and ushers for the VIPs. There will likely be a training after the exams for you to know more about Marina Gallery.
As the Marina Barrage is not open to the public yet, this is a good chance for you to see it first. Furthermore, CCA points will be given out for those helping out for the event.

Helloooooooo green peeps !
Now some updates on the recent TICE camp.

The 3D2N TICE camp at SMU this year was really great!
We really enjoyed the camp and made many new friends from
the tertiary institutions all over Spore...
The structure of the camp was really exciting for each of us involved...!

The Tertiary Institute Council for the Environment (TICE) Eco Camp is an annual camp organised by tertiary insitutes on a turn basis. Singapore Management University was this year's camp organiser.

The purpose of the camp is to better equip our youth with environment knowledge so that they will be better more responsible leaders of tomorrow. The objectives of the camp was to convince participants that a pro-environmental lifestyle is not inconvenient and motivate participants to take action in their respective tertiary institutes.

This year the focus of the camp was on, "reflect, react, relearn". Participants had participated in a 3 days 2 night camp, playing games around Singapore while learning environtmental values. Some games includes: Green Buildings, Recycling Bin Search, Recycle Bag, Green Task Sorting, Battleship, Polar Bear Game, Human Knot and Taboo.

Throughout the camp, participants were also required to keep track of our carbon emissions. The camp were also held in interesting places such as the Botanic, Fort Canning, National Library, Padang and Benjamin Sheare Bridge to allow for on-site-learning.

List of plants visited:

1. Eveready manufacturing plant: Recycle all types of plastics

2. Zen tyre recycling Industry: Rethreading of tyres

3. Tuas south incineration plant: Incinerate waste for effective waste disposal

4. Bee Joo industry: Recycle copper slag, horticulture culture to produce electrical energy

5. Centeonyx: Recycle precious metal from electronics to Gold

6. Nasteel Asia: Recycle steel slag to conserve resources

Eco-Challenge-EYC Mentor Needed- NDPLitter Free Campaign‎

Hi all,

ECO-Challenge Singapore, is heading this year's National day parade -Eco Youth champion. They need volunteers to lead school children and encourage them to talk to the audience at the National Day Parade to bag their own litters. We'll also be doing a little short demonstration to the audience as a whole. This year they'll be participating in more parades, total 4 in all. Thus they require more volunteers to be mentors to these school children. Mentor Trainings will be provided.

This event aims to drive the message of anti littering and also environmental consciousness through a student-led initiative. It is well known that massive amount of litters are left after the parade every year and it is time to change this and upgrade the level of green consciousness among Singaporeans!!

The NDP shows are on 14th, 21st and 28th July and also 4th and 9th August. Those interested must be able to commit to ALL shows.

Hi Everyone,

As you all know that we are currently running a Climate Change (CC) guided walk which will be commencing very soon. I hope all GVians can have a fundemental knowledge on CC.

I have just managed to download TWO videos regarding Climate Change.

First Video: An Inconvenient Truth movie
Needless to say, I believe everyone knows about this movie. This movie give us an overview on how we affected Global Warming - more industries etc, and how CC can affect us - more and more natural disaster etc.

Second Video: The Great Global Warming Swindle (Documentary)
This documentary obliterate the idea of Global Warming being caused by human activities. There are alot of facts records and researches shown in this video, that CC is not caused by having too many industries that emit greenhouse gases.........

Both videos will contradict your ideas/thinking on CC. To support fighting CC or just let CC carry on as it be? you decide... ... ...

as for the tallest structure. we are the main builders. so lets take pride in making the funky+cool+tallest structure! PLS COLLECT MORE CARTON!!

pls update the amount of cartons you have collected. cause i need to make a carton count.

and change of plan. pls read the mail below from NEA.

""Our plans for the "tallest structure made from drink cartons" change a bit.
We are not having a competition but a record setting event.
We want to invite Ngee Ann Poly as the main "Singapore record maker" on Recycling Day Sep 23.

Because if every team collect no more than 500(chances of collecting 500 carton are hard),
each structure may not be very high.
We want this structure to be more impressive and thus more educative.

The changes will be:
Ngee Ann Poly will have to combine 2 teams into 1 to build the tallest structure .
There is no limit on the number of cartons to 500.
You can try to collect as many as you can.
Try to collect as many as possible so your record will not be easily broken
and you can always be the Singapore record maker : )

We will also get schools like Nan Hua and Tanglin to help collect.
We ourselevs and even the Tetrapak company can also help collect.
So that we can make an impressive structure.

Tanglin Secondary can work with Ngee Ann if you need help.

Maybe you can start drink carton collection from now. Please update me about your teams' status, (eg. the number of cartons that Ngee Ann Poly has collected)

NEA Recycling Day 23 Sept 2006

Dear ALL GV Friends,

we will be helping out NEA with the recycling day.

we are setting up 1 Game Booth and senting in 2 teams for the "tallest Structure" competition

Team A : Sylvan, Charlotte, Sally, Kalthoum and Hassenah

Team B : Ming Xue, Rui Xiang, MichelleWu, Yi Xuan and Shikin

There fore, we need as many Empty Drink Cartons as possible. each team is limited to 500 cartons. Below is the examples of the cartons you can collect.. pls read the rules and regulations below too.

Duration: 2 hours (from 9am to 11am on 23 Sep 06, Recycling Day 2006)

Objective: Teams will compete against each other to build the tallest structure made with the empty drink carton collected using the tools provided by the organizers.

Rules (tentative):

1) Manpower: Not more than 5 members per team

2) Materials: To collect not more than 500 empty drink cartons (various sizes as long as acceptable for recycling, as shown in Figure 1) per team and to assemble them into a free-standing structure at the Recycling Day 2006 event. Teams are expected to bring the collected cartons to the event location by 8am on 23 Sep. The number of cartons will be counted and checked before the competition begins.

3) Tools: 2 ´ 2² Scotch-tapes (each about 45m long), 2 ´ scissors, 2 ´ pen knife will be provided. Teams are not allowed to bring their own tools.

4) Connections: No 2 drink cartons shall be connected before the start of the attempt on Recycling Day 2006 on 23 Sep 06.

5) Structure: The base of the free-standing structure shall not exceed the designate area of about 2.5m ´ 2.5m and must remain standing for at least 30 mins after the end of the attempt, i.e. to remain standing at least until 11:30 noon on 23 Sep.

6) Support: Teams are prohibited from use of any forms of support, including chairs and ladders.

Schedule (tentative):

23 Sep
8:00 - 9:00 Team members arrive and register.

Teams collect tools from the officer. Cartons shall be counted.

9:00 - 11:00 Competition.

11:00 - 11:30 Adjudicators wait to certify the highest standing structure.

The NP Klavierensemble(Piano Ensemble) is inviting BEGV to a harp appreciation programme. The programme is co-organised by National Arts Council along with the NP Klavierensemble (Piano Ensemble).

At the end of the programme, students will not only have seen and heard a concert harp performed as a solo instrument but also gained some knowledge about the origin of harps, the various shapes and sizes of ancient and modern harps and the difference between lever harps ( folk harps ) and pedal harps ( orchestra harps ) .

The objectives of this programme are to provide the audience with the opportunity to appreciate the beautiful and soothing sounds of the harp and to gain an insight into the history of harp development.

Chek Jawa, Pulau Ubin, Coastal Cleanup

Marine litter is a pernicious problem that doesn't seem to go away on its own. Once dumped, non-biodegradable items such as styrofoam pieces, plastic bags, used household goods, and even cigarette butts take months or even decades to break down in the environment. In the meantime, they continue to cause untold damage and injury to the marine habitat and their inhabitants.

Join us for a small clean-up session at the mangroves of Tanjung Chek Jawa, Pulau Ubin. More than another CWO session, we will also be collecting data on the various types of litter present for analysis and submission into local and global databases. We are looking at 20 volunteers, and you should be
prepared for long hikes, uneven terrain, plus manually carrying (potentially heavy) trash items out of the mangroves to the truck. Due to the latter reasons, please note that children are NOT suitable volunteers for this effort.

Clean-up Details:
Date: 22 July 2006, Saturday
Meeting Time: 1.15pm at Pulau Ubin Jetty
Clean-up Time: 2.30-4.30pm
Cost: $4 for return ferry ride from Changi Jetty
Bring your own drinks and snacks! Clean-up equipment such as tongs and trash bags will be provided.

Relay Duathlon 2006
is proudly organised by Ngee Ann Canoeing Club once again. We hope to get your support by joining this event which is held annually, where you get to meet canoeists from different area, at the same time gaining experience from this event. The basic outline of the event would be a jog-canoe-jog race.

Competitors are to form pairs and decide who would jog at the beginning and who to jog at the end of the race. The participants jogging at the beginning would jog an approximate distance of 4 km to the beginning of the canoe route.

Once there, the pairs would then have to paddle together for about 8km, to the beginning of the second jog route. And finally, to end off the race, the second participant would have to jog a final 4km.

This year, we would like to open the duathlon to students from various tertiary, secondary school levels, junior colleges and even Singapore's sports school.

Interested parties from public are welcome too! It is an annual event not to be missed.

So come down now to have fun and win attractive goodie bags, vouchers and prizes kindly sponsored by New Urban Male, TYR, and other sponsors who have kindly granted us their generous sponsorship to take part in this event.
